Activity trackers

Fitbit Tracker was the first product released by Fitbit and in 2018 it introduced Fitbit Versa in the smartwatch category. It became Fitbit’s fastest-selling product selling over a million devices over a short span of time. A wristwatch-like product, Fitbit Charge 3 was also marketed by the company in the same year. Later that year, Fitbit announced the new version of its OS, Fitbit OS 3.0. This version came with an on-device dashboard as well as on-device quick logging for water intake and weight, enabling users to view a goal-based exercise mode.

 

Website and Mobile Apps

Fitbit offers a wide spectrum of partner apps that cater to users of iOS, Windows 10 and Android mobiles. The fitness trackers can be synced to mobile devices or computers via Bluetooth. Users can log in and upload & access their exercise, food, sleep, and other activity data and come up with daily and weekly fitness goals that are personalized to their situation and requirements. This app can also be used independent of a fitness tracker and also has a community page where the users can create challenges and groups.

 

Since 2015 Fitbit has expanded through innovation and acquisition when it acquired Fitstar, a fitness coaching app developer. Its most recent acquisition was that of Twine Health in 2018. As a fitness startup, the company hopes that Twine Health’s offerings will complement its existing range of products and services. The products launched by Fitbit this year were Fitbit Inspire HR and Fitbit Versa Lite. The Versa family of watches offer over 3 days of battery life and can help users seamlessly track activity, sleep, heart rate and receive notifications, access apps and much more.

 

Current Challenges

Fitbit’s uninspiring smartwatch ambition received a lukewarm welcome from even its ardent users. Even though it had a longer battery life and was priced at only $300 in comparison to the more expensive Apple and Samsung smartwatches, the product failed to garner much interest.

 

Unlike its competitors, Fitbit also failed to expand its ecosystem that could have supported its products and users in the initial stages of operation. Had they been successful in building an effective ecosystem when they had a monopoly in this market, they could have locked in a larger client base generating more revenues.

 

Future Expectations

Fitbit has sold over 70 million devices since 2007. Even though Fitbit, along with Huami accounts for nearly 80% of all activity trackers globally, this position is under threat. A further threat is the rising trend of smartwatches that are shrinking the activity tracker market. According to experts, the growth and survival of companies like Fitbit is a must if the wearable industry has to succeed.
